Buke and Gase Release Two New Singles
It has been five years since their last full-length album, General Dome, and Buke and Gase have clearly been continuing to experiment with sound in fascinating ways.
Arone Dyer and Aron Sanchez have pushed the boundaries of sound in the past—the name Buke and Gase comes from the names they gave their hand-made, hybrid instruments. General Dome gained success for their almost mechanical, industrial sound that still maintained an organic feel. Each song was complex, with intricate rhythms and vocals, which make them refreshing and intriguing. In their newly released songs, “No Land” and “Pink Boots,” Buke and Gase have pushed even further. “No Land” revisits complicated beats, with Dyer’s vocals over complex, skronking instruments—a sound that goes well with the subject of the song, which they describe as their “response to the ignorance of human and other habitat destruction by rising waters, drought, displacement from war/famine, and subsequent separation of families and how it’s going to get you, too, somehow, when you least desire it to.” Perhaps they felt the current unsettling political landscape creates the perfect time to release more surrealistic, somewhat uncanny music.
The music video for their other newly-released single, “Pink Boots,” is in line with their surrealistic tone. The video of computer-generated versions of the artists is disorienting and somewhat confusing, reminiscent of contemporary video-art that wouldn’t be out of place in an avant-garde art gallery. “Pink Boots” in particular is more electronic and synthetic than Buke and Gase’s work in the past, which may signal a shift in their sound. Hopefully, we’ll get to see their music develop even further in the future.
