Alt-Rock Band Slothrust Kicks Off Headline Tour Dates

Boston-based garage rock band Slothrust, composed of vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter Leah Wellbaum, drummer Will Gorin, and bassist Kyle Bann, has announced dates for their UK, Europe, and United States tour, which kicked off on January 22nd in Glasgow and will end May 24th in Napa, California. The tour dates follow September’s release, The Pact.

The Pact spins Slothrust’s signature lush garage rock sound with pop sensibility, fusing together influences from grunge, blues and jazz to create an album that evokes ‘90s acts Nirvana and The Pixies. “When writing a lot of this material I tried to step further outside of myself and take risks I hadn’t before,” Wellbaum says. “After doing that, I stepped back into the role of performer and author of the material. It’s a really liberating experience.”

“Double Down” is irreverent and powerful, swelling and throbbing against crunchy riffs and the unbridled power of Wellbaum’s vocals, while the bruising “Planetarium” kicks off with garage rock grit before Wellbaum breaks into the first verse. “I want to take you to the planetarium. I want to show you how ugly the sky is.” “Fever Doggs” lurches with myriad time changes, with Wellbaum calling it “a song that feels like a photograph of an old house made of dark rotting wood.”

The EP displays the breadth of the band’s capabilities and takes chances with vulnerability. “Birthday Cake” is classically cheeky— “break my arms or you can break my legs if you want to stay put underneath the covers… But hey I would sit on your birthday cake”— while “Peach” begins with lyrical whimsy before building to a reverberant roar as Wellbaum sings, “tiny tantrums, elves and giants, little turtle, kindergarten. You were so mean to me then, but no one is mean to me now.”
