Denitia’s “Place To Be” Hints At The Cinematic Ode To Come
Brooklyn-based indie pop artist Denitia drops her hypnotic single “Place to Be,” the third off of her debut album Touch of the Sky. Following in the wake of “Where You Go” and “Waves,” which both received placement on Spotify's official Indie Stage playlist, "Place to Be" illustrates the smooth dynamism of her sound, plentifully laden with gently soulful vocals and a slow, synth-driven rhythm. Spurred by the sense of bittersweet loneliness settling in after the end of a tumultuous affair, the song starts with the steady, thoughtful thrumming of a bassline, through which her delicate vocals hover and encircle, delivering a crispness to the reverberation and a strength to the airy soaring.
Self-described as “cinematic alt pop,” the singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist is known for her dreamy genre-melding stylings, expanding upon her previous work in the indie R&B scene as part of futuristic soul duo Denitia and Sene. Touch of the Sky, produced largely from 6:00 am sessions in her studio on the beach, arrives as a fusion of the country music influences from Denitia’s childhood and her signature electronic pop sound, with subtle hints of dream-pop and ambient electronica indicative of Beach House and Cocteau Twins. The album serves as a cinematic ode to nostalgia, self-evolution, and the alchemy of love, as Denitia signifies, “It's a reflective project, it's me coming up for air and wanting even more of what’s out there: a touch of the sky.”
After leaving behind the city’s bustle a few years ago for The Rockaways, a quiet beach community at the outermost edge of New York City, Denitia released a solo EP Air Light under her middle name, ADESUWA. Then, re-emerging as a solo artist, Denitia dropped all aliases to continue recording and performing under her first name, and subsequently released her first EP, Ceilings, in the summer of 2017. A year later, following a series of singles exploring and forging her ethereal pop sound, came the release of her four-song suite Be There, made available as a visual EP on YouTube.
This year has also seen Denitia collaborating with world-renowned musical polymath and British producer Will “Quantic” Holland on the lead single from his latest album, Atlantic Oscillations. “You Used to Love Me” was featured on Apple Music’s Best of the Week and was on rotation for several weeks on BBC6 playlists. This type of notoriety is hardly new for Denitia, however, having already attracted acclaim from the likes of The Guardian, Pitchfork, Village Voice, Stereogum, and Afropunk. Hailed as “the epitome of soulful” by The Fader, and with millions of streams on Spotify and SoundCloud, Denitia is primed for success in the form of this newest, highly anticipated album, out November 8th.
Denitia will be celebrating the release of Touch of the Sky on November 9th at Baby’s All Right with the help of alternative R&B artist DUVV. Denitia will also be a special guest of TEEN’s for their final concert, along with Will Butler of Arcade Fire, on October 30th at Music Hall of Williamsburg.
