Powerful vocals and intense guitar make up much of Mollyanna’s prior music, but to understand the workings beneath painful lyrics and bashing drums, one must dig a little deeper. In fact, digging deeper is the theme of Mollyanna’s newest single, “Archaeology.” An explosively cathartic track, “Archaeology” illustrates the process of excavating layers of repressed feelings and experiences to discover an enlightened and stronger self.

The lead single is just the beginning, however. Part one of a seven track album Archaeology, the record travels a bit farther with each succession. Anchored around vocalist Bernadette Dales’ personal journey in therapy healing from traumas, Mollyanna creates a commanding story of her past experience.

Archaeology marks new ground for the band while giving proof that light at the end of the tunnel exists. In “Human Error,” a Cure-esque acoustic guitar opens the tune and quickly shifts to electric high energy, signaling a change in the album. The song is less fervent, but still strong. “Thief” is nostalgic and reminiscent of youthful energy. Though many of Mollyanna’s songs thrum with vigor, “Thief” is decidedly different. With sparkling electric guitar peppering the otherwise driving beat, the song employs tender transitions between soft and loud elements, giving it a dynamic, beautiful sound.

The band is extremely proud of their final product, and for good reason. The single “Archaeology” captures what the album truly encompasses with a relevant story that many others have experienced themselves. It takes a sensitive and personal subject and makes it shareable for all.

Mollyanna formed when Dales and guitarist Mike Hukins came together, the two friends creating music despite their very diverse influences and musical tastes. With the addition of drummer Laura Moakes and bassist Joshua Roberts, the quartet has succeeded in creating a sound that walks many lines, not quite settling in a single stylistic camp.

Be sure to check out Mollyanna’s new album Archaeology, out on November 1st.
