Punk Rock Band Bakers Eddy Release Infectious New Single "On My Own"
Melbourne-based New Zealanders Bakers Eddy recently revealed new single “On My Own,” a quintessentially upbeat and fun track that serves as an ode to being lazy. Very much on-brand for the band, these punk rockers aren’t asking listeners to dance or sing along if they don’t want to, but good luck resisting the urge.
Bakers Eddy is nothing but optimistically inclined, creating a rapid blend of carefree sonic chaos while remaining firmly in the punk vein. From their cheeky lyrics to their lighthearted and engaging Twitter, this foursome is proving to be immensely entertaining.
Originally comprised of singer Ciarann Babbington, bass player Ian Spagnolo, and drummer Jamie Gordon, the trio later recruited Spagnolo’s twin brother, Alex, as their guitar player. In typical humorous fashion, Babbington explains, “We got sick of Alex playing PS3 in the same room while we rehearsed, so we taught him an A chord and he was in.” Since then the band has steadily moved up in the punk scene, supporting the likes of Highly Suspect, Gang of Youths, and The Rubens.
Their most recent single, “On My Own” is a celebration of laziness, complete with fuzzy guitars and quick, unrelenting percussion. Babbington says, “I'm declaring that I feel uninspired and uninterested and it's so fine. There's so much guilt that comes with having off days in a world of 15-second socialites, where everyone's got their own highlight reel, and I think it's totally fine to slow the fuck down and embrace your introvert every once in a while.”
The song further encapsulates the band’s ethos of not taking life too seriously. Though they work hard at their craft, they aren’t going to overwork themselves. This song is a much-needed reminder that days off are just as important as days on the job.
Shared earlier this year, “Can’t Afford It” is a happy-go-lucky single that takes on the issue of being broke and unemployed. The video showcases various tropes of prosperity and poverty. One scene shows two people trying to purchase a nice glass of wine while the bartender sabotages their fine dining, while another shows the entire band squeezed into a single bathtub in a mess of limbs— the absolute opposite of refined.
Another notable track, “Jack Shit for You” from their 2017 EP I’m Not Making Good Decisions, is simply a party anthem. Written after they moved to Melbourne, the band drew inspiration from all the unbridled fun they were having at the time. It encapsulates the feeling of getting carried away and perhaps making a joke of yourself, but not beating yourself up about it. If there’s one thing that Bakers Eddy contributes to the punk scene, it’s their constant reminder to let go a little and have some fun.
In honor of releasing their newest single and signing to Ivy League Records, the band is doing a small tour through Australia. Join the Bakers Eddy party by listening to their music or purchasing a ticket to see one of their infectious shows.
