Same Girls Question Emotional Clout on Newest Single, “Wait”
Hailing from the eclectic Bay Area, new wave rocker quartet Same Girls’ newest single, “Wait,” is a glitzy, sardonic take on the obsession with “clout culture” in today’s society. This is the band’s first release since their debut album, Young Minded, in 2018.
“Wait” starts off slowly, building up on a wave of far-off guitars before punching through in a dizzying attack from drummer Otto Janes. Accompanied by a glittering spread of textured guitar melodies, lead vocalist Taifa Nia brings it all together with a velvety tone that could be likened to only that of ‘80’s jangle pop icon Morrissey.
Though the track originally started as the unfinished project of a jam session, it quickly morphed into the ironic take on today’s musical culture. Talking to We All Want Someone To Shout For, Nia explains, "This song was a prewarm up jam to us till one day I came up with a hook and said, wouldn’t it be lit if I just wrote one verse and a hook like all the clout rappers do? The lyrics describe someone who is confused how the other isn’t sad and lonely in the modern age."
Formed by childhood friends Taifa Nia, Tyler Valentino, Michael DeVito and Otto Janes, Same Girls broke into the scene in 2016 under the alias, Creative Native. Due to outside circumstances, the band was put on hold until later that year when they were reborn as Same Girls. 2018 saw the four-piece release their first LP Young Minded through Text Me Records, giving the public a dashing collection of tracks influenced by everything from punk to soul, and disco.
Through the flawless execution of the post-psychedelic sound captured on Young Minded, Same Girls has gained a decent amount of traction in the melting pot that is the Bay Area music scene. Featured in local mainstays such as The Deli Magazine and The Bay Bridged, the band has quickly become one to look out for.
Same Girls can be found frequently playing at local venues in the greater San Francisco and Oakland area, with upcoming shows at The Chapel on June 6th and Amnesia Beer and Music Hall on June 29th.
