In her latest single, “So Cold,” soulful singer songwriter Cat Clyde blends sorrowful blues with dashes of folk to create a stunning, heartbreaking ballad. Her melodies are filled with power and fury, a commanding voice leaving no question to her talent. The beauty of her cadence flows through every vocal range, her bold altos and soft falsettos flawless as she heightens the poignant rawness.

The accompanying piano and slide guitar boost the authentic emotion heard through the two minute and fifty second track, a rather meditative look at a personal open wound and the human spirit overall. Spilling into the artwork for the single, the cover showcases a pale, thin woman between blue and white wolves, perhaps portraying the strong pull between light and darkness.

Pulling inspiration from her hometown of Stratford, Ontario, Cat Clyde started her esteemed career early on. She took piano lessons as a child and picked up guitar later in her youth with influences like renowned Robert Johnson, Etta James, The Mississippi Chic, and Lightnin’ Hopkins. Clyde stumbled across the notable “Where Did You Sleep Last Night?” by Lead Belly, which she considers a prominent song in both her life and career. In high school, she wrote her first song, “Mama Said,” and after graduating college in 2015, she completed her first album.

Other songs on Hunter’s Trance are equally beautiful, each one bursting with nostalgia and classic jazzy sounds of yesteryear. Erupting with emotions that converge tenderly with the heart, “I Don’t Belong Here” and “Anymore” strike deep and stand out. Velvety melodies and careful arrangements nod to blues legends like Amy Winehouse and Janis Joplin, yet Clyde has carved out her own transformative space, managing to hit over 9 million streams on Spotify for just a single song alone.

Recently wrapping up a sold out tour with JS Ondara and a previous sold out Europe run with Shakey Graves, Cat Clyde has also shared the stage with folk musician ZZ Ward and Paul Kelly in North America. Hunter’s Trance is now available on Spotify and all other streaming platforms.
