Hunny Shares Gleeful New Single, “Saturday Night” Off Debut Album
Californian indie rock band Hunny is thrilled to share “Saturday Night” from their debut full-length album Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. out July 19th. Featuring LA punk rock band Bleached, their latest single is a pining confession with frenetic arrangements and a pulsing rhythm, topped off with pop culture references to My So-Called Life and Echo & the Bunnymen.
While the nature of the band is optimistic and carefree, “Saturday Night” uses their trademark sound and layers on heavier, expressive lyrics. “It’s mostly about being emo in your bedroom on a weekend night, but being able to share that with somebody else” bassist and keyboardist Kevin Grimmett explains. The story conveyed has a “love you more than literal life” thread with raw vulnerability from the band, a melancholic romance.
Hunny follows inspiration from ‘80s new wave and ‘90s pop as they fuse the two over bright beats and gleaming melodies. Walking in line with other bands like Smallpools, Wallows, and Bad Suns, their slightly dissonant vocals are reminiscent of Robert Smith from The Cure, minus the smeared lipstick and backcombed frizzy hair.
The upcoming album was produced by Grammy Award-winner Carlos de la Garza, known for his work with Cherry Glazerr, Culture Abuse, and Paramore. Hunny wrote most of the songs on acoustic guitar, and it shows on “Saturday Night.” Their sprawling guitars and clean tones stand out, the tri-chorus producing a rich, shimmering quality in the intro coupled with an alluring ‘80s synth.
Created in a relatively dire situation, Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. was written during the shattering Woolsey Fire and Camp Fire in November of 2018, two natural disasters that devastated nearly 100,000 acres across Southern California. The fires were in close proximity to Grimmett’s house, with numerous firefighters stomping around in the backyard to prevent the fire from spreading onto the property, meanwhile demoing and writing forged on.
Grimmett recounts the perseverance of the band to create music through this time, “They blocked off all the streets and we had to sneak into my place through this apartment structure. Thankfully my house is still standing and the hills are a bright green.”
A relatively new band, Hunny is currently signed with Epitaph Records and is stoked about what the future holds. Be sure to check out and pick up Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. later this month.
