Brooklyn based band Peaer is excited to announce their upcoming album A Healthy Earth, a meticulously balanced collection of songs examining our shared human existence, set to release August 16th via Tiny Engines.

Similar to other modern indie artists like Delta Sleep, Mumblr, and Strange Ranger, Peaer takes simple tones and makes them vibrant and colorful. Their newly released single “Don’t” is mixed in a purposefully minimal manner. Vocalist and guitarist Peter Katz matches his voice with the cadence of a single thrumming electric guitar. Experimental yet simple, the tonal color is aggressive and resigned at the same time, something that the mixing helps display. Katz sings “don’t act like you don’t know what you’re acting like,” reflecting the feeling of frustration teased out of exhaustion, followed later by an abrupt ending that slams the finality of the overall mood.

According to the band, the rest of the album explores similar themes like the ones found in “Don’t.” Peaer specifically set out to create music using a technique traditionally used in classical music called tone painting. When tone painting, the subject of the song is mirrored by the musicality itself. A song like “Don’t”— which is laden with lyrics describing discontentment— contains musical elements that reflect frustration. It’s communication of feeling, two-fold.

Other songs from the album use tonal coloring in different ways. An example is the song “Ollie,” which gets its name after Katz’s dog. During the tune, a hyperactive bass clarinet solo reflects the energy of a puppy, meant to be Ollie. “Multiverse” on the other hand is about a theoretical universe. A thought provoking song, the band pairs aching, raw harmonies against autotune vocals to convey the idea of a celestial life unlived, an otherworldly concept. It's clear that Peaer values artistry in their craft. Their attention to detail alone is impressive.

Peaer started out as Katz’ solo project with a revolving door of musicians until a tight trio formed, which remains today between bassist and vocalist Thom Lombardi and drummer Jeremy Kinney. Together, the three have spent countless hours devising creative and scientific music that layers itself around technical skill and social awareness. Along the way, they have had their fair share of quick quips as well. Their music is chock full of educated commentary on the current state of American society and the problems present. A band that proves music is not just an art, but also a science.
