Alternative rock band Trü  – yes, umlaut included – released their EP, Growing Pains, this past June through Sniffling Indie Kids. The work of Pat DeFrancisci (guitar/vocals), Keith Williams (guitar/vocals), Cindy Ward (bass/vocals), and Steve Cerri (drums), Trü originated in 2016 out of the New Jersey punk scene, the name “Trü” meant to evoke the ubiquitous millennial catchphrase. Growing Pains is a follow up to the self-titled four-track EP they released in 2017, and serves to further illustrate the band’s undeniable talent.

Growing Pains has five songs total, and as the title would suggest, express a simmering frustration and disenfranchisement with the idea of adulthood. To young adults just emerging from teenage-hood to find that life does not actually get simpler once you’re “grown up,” it resonates.

In “The Graduate,” Trü vocalizes the fear of not only change but of a lack of change, a fear of stagnation, the question—what could I have done by now? “Peace of Mind” expresses an exhaustion with the pressure to find fulfillment, to be going somewhere. The EP is extremely well-balanced and dynamic—”Loneliness” and “Same Conversation, Different Day” feature heavier guitar riffs and grunge tones, while “Peace of Mind” adds dimension and variety to the collection, expressing the same frustrations in a slower, softer way.

Wrapping up a tour around New Jersey, Maine, and Pennsylvania, they’ve got one last upcoming show in Boston on August 18th.
