Vocalist, musician, and producer Sid Sriram released his first solo record, Entropy, on February 6th following the January release of his exciting, powerful single, also entitled “Entropy.” In 2018, he stirred up interest in his unexpected turn to independent work by dropping the singles “Isn’t It True” and “6 Weeks.” These two tracks garnered a substantial amount of attention, especially for an artist better known for his classical southern Indian vocal style and performances of Indian pop songs.

Though Sriram has a dedicated fan base primarily through his rich Indian musical roots, his creative skill set extends beyond to much more. Born in Chennai, India and relocated to Fremont, California at the age of one, Sriram first began learning music from his mother, Latha, who taught Carnatic music— a classical style of Indian music— in the San Francisco Bay area. Sid Sriram graduated from the Berklee College of Music in Boston with a degree in music production and engineering, and explored his love for R&B, low-fi hip hop, and old-school soul, which shine through on his debut record.

The groundbreaking album opens with “Eyes Open,” a song that encapsulates the mood of the rest of the record, as well as his artistic identity. The track includes all of his musical influences, including his trademark Carnatic voice, layered with a trap beat. He employs distortion and fading, and his love for high value production noticeably shows.

Another standout track, his previous single “6 Weeks,” contains elements of a successful pop song, but he makes it his own with an inventive, infectious radio quality that will garner an even broader following. “Back Down” on the other hand, simplifies itself. A lone electric guitar accompanies a dissonant background sound, with Sriram’s voice echoing over the two, seamlessly fusing together. The song is short, but gets to a very specific, tangible feeling.

The diversity of songs and styles on the album is significant, yet the different sounds blend together well and create something sonically exhilarating and new. Sriram says of the album, “I realized there is immense power and beauty in allowing all the different shades of one’s identity to swim together freely, clashing against and feeding into each other, evolving as one. Entropy is me in my truest, most raw form.”

In addition to Entropy being available on all streaming platforms, Sriram has also announced a North American tour in support of the album, kicking off next month. Check out the dates below and be sure to follow Sid Sriram in all social channels for the latest updates.
