Lady Lamb on Honesty and Love in Title Track “Even in the Tremor”
Brooklyn-based singer songwriter Aly Spaltro, otherwise known as Lady Lamb, recently released her rumbling title track for her upcoming album Even in the Tremor.
With two prior albums, Spaltro says she wants to speak with honesty and give life to her stories. “The whole idea of this new album is the push and pull between calmness and chaos, joy and anxiety, self-loathing and self-love,” she explains. This pull reflects in the luminous track itself. In spite of the reckless and wild beat of bass and synth, the lyrics depict the forthright vulnerability of overthinking in love and in life. The first chorus around, Spaltro sings, “The past will kill the present if I let it,” but circles back on her second chorus, “The future kills the present if I let it.” It speaks to those who cannot forget the past or stop worrying about the future enough to enjoy themselves in the moment.
In combination with the energetic rhythm carrying through “Even in the Tremor,” the lyrics convey an undertone of worry and pain, as well as happiness and hope. All of the additional percussion and synth drops out for Spaltro’s final line of song, “When even in the tremor I feel a stillness growing.” The resounding message ends as the music stops to let her last words sink in.
This transparent honesty shows her own reflection on the journey towards an internally geared album. “It’s taken me years to get here,” she says. “But I’m done with hiding myself. I want to be as honest as I can because that’s why people turn to art. Anybody can tell the difference between bullsh*t and real vulnerability.”
For the upcoming album, bassist and pianist Benjamin Lazar Davis— known for Cuddle Magic, Kimbra, Okkervil River— and drummer Jeremy Gustin— previously involved in David Byrne, Albert Hammond Jr., Rubble Bucket— joined Spaltro for recording in Brooklyn’s Figure 8 Studios.
Even in the Tremor is set to release April 5th through Ba Da Bing Records, and Lady Lamb will start the North American Deep Love tour on April 10th at Space Ballroom in Hamden, CT with Renata Zeiguer, completing the second half of the tour with Katie Von Schleicher and finishing June 1st at The State Theatre in Portland, ME.
