Portland’s indie punk band Summer Cannibals is unstoppable, taking every risk and dare on their new album Can’t Tell Me No, out today via Tiny Engines. From scraping an entire record and starting from scratch, to escaping both a manipulative personal and creative relationship, lead singer and guitarist Jessica Boudreaux— accompanied by her three bandmates— wrote full force until their latest album was roaring with fury and brimming with hunger.

The quartet recorded and mixed many of the new tracks during 14-hour days, piling into Boudreaux’s home studio where they engineer records for other bands and artists. “Writing this record and making it ourselves was about liberation from the parts of an industry that have protected abusers for way too long, and about saying fuck you to the people who have invalidated my and so many others’ experiences of abuse,” says Boudreaux.

A defiant ‘90s masterpiece, title track “Can’t Tell Me No” stems from her journey of taking back power and the sacrifices made to ensure someone manipulative couldn’t benefit from the new record. In this garage-rock style anthem, twisted guitar riffs are accompanied by Boudreaux’s raw, but controlled, vocals for three and a half minutes of sheer mayhem. Swelling melodies rise in power as the song progresses, crashing with a thumping bass and merging with increasingly biting lyrics.

Summer Cannibals’ fiery energy mirrors the subversive youthfulness of the band and their climbing career. Making their first step into the music world in 2015 with an appearance on NPR’s Sound Opinions Best Of list, followed by a television debut in 2016 on Last Call with Carson Daly, the band has been unstoppable ever since. Performing alongside The War on Drugs, Mudhoney, L7, Ted Leo & the Pharmacists, among many others, Summer Cannibals have only grown in musical cadence and technique through endless dedication.

The band refuses to stop there, continuing their reinvigorated charge in the midst of a massive tour through the U.S. Check out their tour dates below and be sure to pick up Can’t Tell Me No, available now.
