Norwegian punk band Sløtface— formerly known and still pronounced as “slutface”— resurface with a vengeance with new pop punk tune “Telepathetic” as the first look from their upcoming sophomore album.

Consisting of singer Haley Shea, guitarist Tor-Arne Vikingstad, bassist Lasse Lokøy, and drummer Nils Jørgen Nilsen, the band formed in 2012 and released their first single “Angst” in 2014. Now they’ve become one of Norway’s premiere punk bands, known especially for their outspoken feminism and environmental activism, along with the occasional tour dates at Norwegian prisons as part of a government youth program.

“Telepathetic” has a surprising inception, written late in the day while the band members were drained and fatigued. Vikingstad says of the song, “It was written in approximately two hours, at 11:00 in the evening, after a full day of recording. Most of us don’t remember any of it because we were so tired.”

A thread of youthful impatience flows through the track, their punk roots apparent yet they’ve stepped into a more colorful punk-pop realm. Vocalist Haley Shea talks about the meaning, “The song is about the feeling, usually when you’re growing up, or working a job you don’t like, or other halfway points where it just feels like everything good is happening in other places from where you are. It’s about how ineffectual it is to wait around and hope for things to happen, about how you have to make things happen, but also about the silly fear that if you dream about something it might not happen.”

When creating a song so influenced by the unsure and angsty reality of many youth in their early and late teens, the step to pop is fitting. The energetic, propelling bass and lead guitar paint a perfect picture, while Shea’s voice holds a distinctly vigorous yearning that speaks volumes.

Sløtface burst into the scene with their debut album Try Not To Freak Out in 2017, described by NME as “one of 2017’s most exciting new bands” while relentlessly touring for the better part of two years. Details have not been released as to when the forthcoming album will be released, but in the meantime, the new sound of “Telepathetic” gives a hint of what’s to come for Sløtface.
