Stripped down to the barest riffs and vocals, latest single “Get Lost” off of Queen of Jeans’ upcoming album slowly progresses from simple, clear notes, converging upon a loud, fastidious layering of sound. Though the song showcases a new and distinct style for the group, there remain a number of familiar elements, such as Miriam Devora’s smooth tilting vocals over western-grunge transitions and stirring, yet varied rhythms. The deliberate movement from clean and smooth to dense and urgent within the track illustrates the intensity from the upcoming full-length work, If you’re not afraid, I’m not afraid, out August 23rd on Topshelf Records.

Not only does the first track serve as a notable premonition for what lies ahead on the new record, but it also intimates the story behind its development. Lead singer Devora shares her experience in the studio two weeks after her mother’s passing, explaining, “‘Get Lost’ became my personal anthem during a time when I needed some sort of reassurance that I wasn’t a waste. It helped me process a very real and isolating experience of grief, and turn it into a positive and somewhat humorous interpretation of self-care. Life is messy, and happiness is not always guaranteed. Sometimes allowing yourself to recognize what you perceive to be your shortcomings and owning them can set you free from emotional prison.”

At the same time, the Philadelphia-based band found themselves grappling as members of the queer community with the political climate following the 2016 U.S. election. Devora conveys, “I found myself in fear not only of losing my mom to her illness, but of losing my space within society as a queer woman, and watching space get taken away from so many others.” If you’re not afraid, I’m not afraid acts as the culmination of all of these difficulties as the members learn to navigate loss, relationships, and discrimination. But there is a joviality and lightness between licks of reflection and sincerity, as the group continues to demonstrate their staunch commitment to variety and juxtaposition, a self-proclaimed “kaleidoscope of jangle and denim.”
