Oso Oso To Explore Fresh Perspective On New Album
Oso Oso returns with two new singles ahead of an optimistic and fresh album, Basking in the Glow. A bright, swelling composition of songs, the upcoming album will come out next month on August 16th.
The first single, “Dig (II),” begins with an easygoing rhythm paired with simple beats and dreamy electric guitar. Two-thirds of the way through, the song shifts to building an anticipated sense of excitement where Jade Lilitri’s solitary voice doubles, or possibly triples, into the outro filled with guitar riffs. “Dig (II)” glides in a casual and effortlessly cool fashion, sauntering with confidence in the beginning until revealing an exciting burst of emotion.
Even newer is “Impossible Game,” which similarly encapsulates an unbothered presence and exists without the bells and whistles. Excellently executed, the simplicity of “Impossible Game” is addicting. The song reaches to late ‘90s and early 2000’s alternative for inspiration and free spirit, bringing to mind suburban living rooms and neighborhood sidewalks perfect for skating. The optimism of this single is undoubtedly questioned, but lyrics like, “I got a glimpse of this feeling, I’m trying to stay in that lane,” shows the effort to stay positive.
Comparable to bands like It Looks Sad, Marietta, and The Hotelier, Oso Oso takes emo and makes it light. In fact, someone should trademark this particular genre as ‘Emo Lite.’ The lyrics often reflect a downtrodden or nihilist character, but the instrumentation is also bubbly and jangly. That being said, Oso Oso takes this sub-genre a step further with Basking in the Glow by staying hopeful lyrically. Overall, it’s a delightful twist on not only the band’s usual style, but also on the genre as a whole.
Trying out a new mood undoubtedly suits Oso Oso. Maturing and growing as a band, this fresh perspective looks good for them. Be sure to pick up Basking in the Glow on August 16th and check out Oso Oso’s first full U.S. tour kicking off shortly after the release.
