Girl Friday’s Final West Coast Tour Dates, New EP Fashion Conman
Girl Friday, composed of bassist Libby Hsieh, guitarists Vera Ellen and Sierra Scott, and drummer Virginia Pettis, is a label-defying band founded in L.A. The feminist quartet, based in a fusion of ‘90s alt-rock, indie, and mod-pop, pulled together four reflective songs for their EP Fashion Conman, released this past June.
Each member has a hand in songwriting, taking turns with the microphone and offering unique, varied sounds and lyrics. Despite having big personalities, they have come to compliment each other with a well-written follow up to their debut, Tiny Hats. While similar to Stef Chura and Crumb, Girl Friday is a band of its own, and Fashion Conman is a testament to that sentiment.
With an upbeat tone paired with a morose topic, lead single “Headstones” is the perfect punk-indie balance. The lyrics point to being trapped and feeling threatened, but it is not without hope. The repeated wish to “run away” offers a glimmer of combativeness, of belligerently fighting back against constraints. The lyrics and musical baseline constructs eclectic sounds representative of Girl Friday’s music.
With a striking beat that sets the tone, “Lullaby No. 13” fuses a playfully light voice with catchy, albeit eerily flowing music. It comes to a finish with an accelerated punk section while the singer laments the lines between dreams and reality, inter-spliced with soft-spoken lyrics urging companionship.
“Decoration/Currency” starts with a tone similar to the end of Courtney Barnett’s “History Eraser,” with a sweet, lilting melody. The melody falls away to a quicker chorus, tilting with menacing, deadly lyrics.
Girl Friday is a coming of age feminist collective, and raises consciousness with their music, all while emerging in a chaotic world. They forge commonalities within a multitude of perspectives being drowned out by oppression and an unimaginative, passive society. Girl Friday’s music, including Fashion Conman, is currently on Bandcamp and iTunes.
