LA based punk band, The Regrettes, kick off autumn with the release of their sophomore album, How Do You Love? The album travels through the life of a relationship, from the early flushes of emotion, through the rough breakup, to the bittersweet culmination closure brings. Eighteen-year-old lead singer Lydia Night wrote a large portion of the lyrics, pulling inspiration from her personal relationships that come together to tell a story, transforming the album into a connected piece of art.

The band, complete with Night, guitarist Genessa Gariano, bassist Brooke Dickson, and drummer Drew Thomsen, begins the album like most relationships would start: upbeat and addictive. “California Friends” is incredibly catchy as the lyrics ring of the hope and curiosity that comes from budding love. Night plays with the excitement of guessing what the object of her affection is thinking, wondering how to toe the line between love and friendship.

Other songs detail the problems within the relationship, highlighting the dwindling unsure end. “More Than A Month” is one of the many breaking points in the album. Insecurity seeps through as the lyrics probe whether the fictional ex thinks of her, or wants to call her, and what should she do? The addition of instruments is layered, adding more after the initial start of the song. A minute in, Night slows her words to a fast-paced lull before picking back up again with a definitive voice.

The final track continues to have a lightweight beat, but the lyrics foretell a different reality. There is no more berating of the ex in “How Do You Love?” Now, Night turns the spotlight to herself as the narrator, unable to fathom how strangers can love each other without working the anxiety inside into knots. She muses love could be fake, but continues to desperately want to understand it, posing the question that sets the stage for the album. This track has the strongest punk energy, with Night’s resilient voice, constantly changing from low staccato to a high lilt.

The Regrettes have earned a multitude of accolades over the past few years, from being highlighted on Conan and Jimmy Kimmel Live! to receiving praise from Rolling Stone, Billboard, Variety, and more. The exceptionally crafted How Do You Love? can only lead to continued acclaim, especially with their North American tour in full bloom.
