Anna Meredith Unveils Stunning Singles Off Upcoming Album, Fibs
A plucked string swoops in like a dove, staccato drums interrupt, serene violin floats in, and an otherworldly synth ties it all together. A master of highly technical and intricate sounds, Anna Meredith returns with a much anticipated second album, Fibs, set to release on October 25th via Black Prince Fury.
Meredith, an established classical musician and composer, shows music as science in her new album. In fact, she takes it a step further by partnering with designer and coder Arthur Carabott to create an app to go with her single “Moonmoons.” The app is meant to be an interactive portal into the song.
Meredith explains, “Moonmoons are the moons of moons, and this idea of intergalactic worlds within worlds and of doubling and playing with scale, of zooming in and out is explored right through the piece, down to the cascading climactic slowing down textures which are actually constructed using the rest of the electronics compressed into two second gestures.”
App users can choose where to move within a virtual space containing six speakers that change their volume depending on the distance the listener is from them. The format creates a personalized listening experience allowing for no two versions of her song to sound the same. She has also recorded it traditionally, so users can compare and contrast their experience with the studio version.
Another single from the album, “Paramour,” is a heavily layered, winding, experimental track, and blends classical elements with synthesized modernity. To go along with the eccentric and mesmerizing sound, Meredith created a music video showcasing a toy train that twists around the musicians on a track. The frame shows the perspective of the train, so there is no knowing what comes next until the engine turns the corner.
The song is fast and racing, with moments of extreme intensity, and more strangely, moments reminiscent of a marching band tune. Just like the winding track, you won’t know where the song will take you until it turns a blind corner.
Speaking to the album’s title, Fibs, Meredith describes the reference as “lies — but nice friendly lies, little stories and constructions and daydreams and narratives that you make for yourself or you tell yourself.” In conjunction with the title’s meaning, Meredith constructs her songs based upon those stories and narratives of her mind, weaving together a fabricated piece of music that ebbs and flows like a wonderland of sound.
Anna Meredith will take her sound on the road with a small winter tour beginning in February of next year. Fibs will be available everywhere on October 25th.
