Indie rock quartet Sego was recently featured on NPR’s All Songs Considered for their newest track “Neon Me Out,” the first song off their forthcoming album Sego Sucks. In spite of Sego Sucks landing as their sophomore album, the band has collected an intense following for their powerful atmospheric alt-rock.

Originally started by singer Spencer Petersen and Thomas Carroll, they were joined by both Alyssa Davey on bass and Brandon McBride on guitars and keys in 2018. While Petersen and Carroll have been releasing music since 2014’s Wicket Youth LP, they have doubled the group as a means to solidify their energetic, fiery sound.

For this album, the band decided to stray away from computers and technological production, instead recording the album live in a remote church located in Canada. The results can only mean rawer, grittier elements. The video for “Neon Me Out” embodies this same grittiness, complete with morphing camera angles, members of the band portrayed in double, triple, and spiraled inward. This goes on while the lyrics appear as a constant.

Just as Petersen sings “Took my life for granted till I saw myself in pixels, All alone and lost for words so take a thousand pictures. Then you bought a camera, made my female friends all models, Now I’m seeing Sophie posing nearly naked by the water,” the lyrics give into snapshots of modern and robotic humanity, with stacked faces carved out to form hollow shells in the center of the frame, mirroring an inception. Every jangle of tambourine and twang of bass line pulls you closer to the message— give up the persona that is drowning you out.

In addition to “Neon Me Out,” Sego has also released “Shame” from their eclectic album, set to release April 5th via Roll Call Records. With their electric live performances as well as their wide range of fans, anyone who hears them will be sure to keep dancing to the beat.
